It seems like a directory can exist for just about everything--directory publishing abounds--but who actually creates these directories? Certainly the more famous directories are the Yellow Pages or the White Pages. There are a variety of directory publishers in the marketplace today, fulfilling the publishing directory demands from all across the country. One of the premier organizations dealing with the publishing of directories is the Association of Directory Publishers (ADP). Its website is www.adp.org. The ADP is the international trade association founded in 1898 to promote the establishment and maintenance of the highest standard of quality and service in directory publishing. It provides to its members industry-relevant communications, content-rich meetings and conventions, research, legal and legislative support, and various other programs and services. ADP membership today includes more than 140 directory publishers, and some 90 other associates who supply goods and services to those publishers.

The stated mission of the Association of Directory Publishers is to:

  • promote the common business interest of;
  • improve the general business conditions for;
  • protect the competitive rights of;
  • and facilitate the exchange of information of importance to, businesses engaged in the publication of printed telephone and other directories.
